A little foot massage?
It's bizarre that sometimes, in life, you decide to undertake a course, read a book or go to an event purely for fun or for personal interest and then somewhere along the way it turns out to have a massive impact on your everyday life!
This was very much the case when I decided to study baby massage with The Northern Institute of Massage several years ago. Originally, because it looked interesting and fun and, granted something a little bit different from other courses at the time. Ironically, since moving to Southwest London, at the beginning of 2007, teaching baby massage has not only become one of the most enjoyable parts of my working week, but one of the main things that I do as a practitioner!
I have since discovered that baby massage still remains largely unheard of where I'm originally from (Warwickshire) and yet has emerged as one of the most beneficial things to do when becoming a new mum in the London area.
As a baby massage practitioner I feel utterly privileged to be a part of the first few months of your baby's life. I take you through techniques that help with conditions such as colic, constipation, wind and crankiness. It also enhances the bonding process between parent and baby, something that is always naturally assumed but in reality can be more tricky, and therefore rather distressing for a parent when it's assumed bonding will be strong immediately after birth.
It's also a great opportunity to be with other new parents and exchange experiences so you can share advice and feel comfortable in the knowledge that you're doing everything right! I've discovered that confidence is severely lacking among most new, first time parents so I love providing reassurance and support where necessary.
I won't deny that baby massage courses are also a giggle! My disastrous single life usually provides no end of entertainment when suddenly your baby has to dominate your daily routine! Babies themselves are further entertainment as they discover their own hands, feet and voice! Watching them grow, develop and constantly test the boundaries is amazing, extremely special and, at times, mind blowing: going from an inability to roll over one day to rolling over and lifting their head on their own the next! It's astounding.
So, given all the benefits of baby massage I'm still surprised that when I visit my folks back in sunny Stratford upon Avon I can't find anyone offering the service, when only a couple of hours drive takes you to an area that is saturated with practitioners and courses! Personally I think comprehensive baby massage courses should be included in free postnatal care but until that day comes research and find a good course near you. You'll be amazed at the relationships you will form, not only with your baby but also with those who join you!
